HEAD COACH James Amrol

As Head Coach of our newest 12U team, Coach Amrol has already led this squad of mainly first-year 12U players to two championship appearances. As Head Coach of the 2020 Lightning 10U team last season, Coach Amrol led the newly formed team to multiple tournament championship appearances. Prior to taking on the 10s and this year’s 12s, Coach Amrol had coached several seasons for the Lightning at the 12U level. His teams earned great success, appearing in five tournament championships, winning two of them. Prior to coming to Lightning, Coach Amrol coached the Babe Ruth All-Star Cap Area Sliders 10U team. He’s also coached for many years with the Concord National Youth Softball (CNYS) League at the AAA and Majors level. He currently serves as President of CNYS and on the New Hampshire Lightning Board of Directors.

COACH Deb Smith

Coach Smith led the NHTI softball team for 16 years while also coaching the Pembroke Academy varsity softball team in the spring. Coach Smith was, herself, a three-sport high school athlete playing field hockey, basketball, and softball for the Pembroke Academy Spartans before she moved on to NCAA Division III Ithaca College to play field hockey and softball. At Ithaca, she earned numerous athletic awards and was ultimately inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame. After college, coach Smith joined Roger’s Renegades out of Hooksett, NH, playing in USA national tournaments all over the country. Currently, Coach Smith is the Director of Wellness & Recreation at the New Hampshire Technical Institute.

COACH Kari Thurman

Coach Thurman grew up in Illinois, where she played ASA competitive travel softball from 10U all the way through 18U. She was recruited and played softball for University of Missouri-KC, a NCAA Division I school in the Mid-Continent (a mid-major) Conference. While playing at UMKC, Coach Thurman earned All-Conference 2nd team and All-Conference Tournament honors. Though an accomplished pitcher, Coach Thurman also spent time as a catcher, and was also recognized for her strong bat. When she wasn’t on the field herself, Coach Thurman worked with younger players to help them develop their skills, particularly in the area of pitching.
